Throughout the ongoing odor/H2S issues with the former Fenimore Landfill site residents have sought air purification units to help improve air quality within their homes.
The Health Department recommends reviewing this information prior to purchasing a home air purifier. Most units are designed to purify indoor air pollutants common to many homes (i.e., cigarette smoke, pet dander, etc.) and not for landfill gases. While activated carbon and ionization may remove some H2S gas, the effectiveness varies greatly depending on factors such as room size and pollutant concentration. While the Township is neither recommending the purchase of an Air Purifier nor advocating against it, it is recommending that you make an informed decision based on your family’s needs.
